We are writing in response to the article by Catherine Simpson ('Crushed medications: An emerging guideline', ANJ, July 2005, pp. 21-23). As hospital pharmacists, we were surprised by some of the recommendations with regard to drugs that should not be crushed. In many cases, medications which are available in immediate release and slow release preparations were listed as 'drugs not to be crushed', but with no clarification as to whether this recommendation pertained to both the slow release and immediate release form, or to the slow release preparation alone.
